A Residual Current Device (RCD) is a safety device that promptly interrupts an electrical circuit to protect equipment and reduce the risk of major damage from electric shock. These electrical switching devices are designed to isolate a circuit rapidly and automatically when it senses that the electrical current is unbalanced between the supply and return conductors of a circuit.
RCDs are designed to disconnect conducting wires quickly enough to avoid potentially serious injury to humans, and to prevent damage to electrical devices.
RCDs are test and reset devices: one test button reliably creates a small leakage condition, and another button resets the conductors after a fault condition has been removed. Some RCDs disconnect both the energized and return conductors in the event of a fault (double-pole), whereas a single-pole RCD disconnects only the energized conductor
