Dimmers are devices connected to a luminaire and used to reduce the brightness of the light. By varying the wave shape of the voltage applied to the lamp, it is possible to reduce the brightness of the light emission.
Dimmers can range in size from small units the size of household light switches to high-powered units used in large theatrical or architectural lighting installations.
Small domestic dimmers are usually operated directly, although remote control systems (such as the X10) are available. Modern professional dimmers are generally controlled by a digital control system such as DMX or DALI. In more recent systems, these protocols are often used in conjunction with Ethernet.
