Power Outlets

Commercial

Power Outlets Commercial

A power point is a socket that connects an electrical equipment to the main electrical installation. In buildings, power points are usually installed on walls, although they can also be installed on the floor. They are occasionally placed on the ceiling to power devices such as garage door openers or neon signs in shop windows.

It usually takes an electrician between 45 mins to 1.5 hours depending on the method of installation of the power socket and the accessibility of its location. At APS Electrical Services we care about the quality and results of our work so as a rule we make sure to carry out a complete installation with the expected professional results based on the standards that characterize us.

Power Outlets

Everything you need to know about them

Most of the time we hardly pay attention to them, but sockets are perhaps the most important part of the electrical installation. They are the last step that allows our appliances to be safely connected to the mains.

On top of that, sockets come in many different types depending on the country and even within Australia, they have better and better safety features and are even getting smarter.

That is why we are going to show you everything you need to know about one of the most important and overlooked elements: sockets. You are sure to find out a few interesting things.

What is a Power Outlet?

A socket is a device that allows appliances that run on electricity to be connected to the mains and to receive it safely in order to operate. In addition, we call the two parts of the mechanism a plug: male and female.

Thus, the plug is a piece of insulating material with several metal protrusions (the male plug, which has two or three such protrusions depending on the type) and also the piece of insulating material with holes that is constantly connected to the mains. In the past, plugs were much more fragile than today’s plugs or had less insulating material.

How a plug works

When the two parts are joined together, i.e., the male plug is inserted into the female socket, the mains current passes through the protrusions. From there, it is conducted through the cable of the plug to our electrical appliance, making it work.

Both the plug and socket, as well as the cable of the plug, are covered with insulating material which ensures that the current flows safely from the mains to the appliance.

The safety of today's

plugs and Power Outlets

In the past, sockets were much more fragile than today’s sockets or had less insulating material, which meant that the parts through which electricity is conducted were exposed through wear and tear. Likewise, the socket holes were less protected than today’s sockets and you could get a shock if you touched them with your fingers.

Today, however, that has changed, and the safety measures are greater. Today’s sockets, in fact, often have plastic insulating plugs in the holes. This makes contact with the active part of the female plug impossible without inserting the male plug, which opens the plastic shutters by pushing with its protrusions when you plug it in.

Similarly, some sockets incorporate other protections, such as power surge protection, and even the latest ones can be intelligent and connected via Wi-Fi.

The new smart plugs in home automation

The socket seems simple, yet it is constantly evolving. And not only in terms of safety, “smart plugs”, connected via Wi-Fi, are now becoming popular.

In fact, you can turn your normal socket into a smart socket with a device that connects to the socket and, at the same time, to the Internet via Wi-Fi.

What’s the point? So that we can control it remotely with our mobile phone or computer. In this way, we can remotely power an appliance, such as a computer or the heating, using it even if we are not present.

As you can see, sockets seem like something simple that we don’t pay much attention to, but they are one of the most important parts of the electrical system.

Where can they be installed?

In buildings or areas destinated for companies or businesses, the majority of sockets are normally installed in office areas, as this is where the need to have equipment connected during the working day is most common.

However, this factor can vary greatly depending on the sector the company or business is in, for example:

A company dedicated to the creation of digital marketing as support for other companies will have a greater number of sockets in the office area as the work tool that this type of business will use will be several computers with monitors and office supplies, fax, copiers, printers etc, destinating most of electricity to power this equipment.

In comparison with the previous example of the digital marketing company, it would be very different if the company or business is dedicated to the 24h laundry sector, as most of the sockets will be used to supply energy for washing machines, dryers or other machinery dedicated to washing, drying or cleaning clothes or textile material, and would not be so focused on the office area.

In companies or businesses where the companies offer both, office area and workshop area, or production area, it may be the case that both types of different examples of the above mentioned zones are offered.
