A smoke detector is a device that can detect smoke, commonly as an indicator of a fire. Most commercial smoke detectors send a signal to a fire alarm control panel as part of a fire alarm system. Residential smoke detectors, also referred to as smoke alarms, commonly emit an audible or visual alarm from the detector itself or from multiple detectors if there are several interconnected devices.
As required by the Australian Wiring Rules, in the case of more than one smoke detector/alarm in a domestic premises, they should be interconnected so that in the event of one alarm going off automatically, the other would also go off, warning the occupants of the danger of a possible fire.
Smoke detectors are generally enclosed in plastic housings, usually in the shape of a disc about 150 millimeters. Smoke can be detected optically (photoelectric) or by a physical detection process (ionization).
Sensitive alarms can be used to detect and prevent smoking in banned areas. Smoke detectors in large commercial and industrial buildings are often connected to a central fire alarm system. Domestic smoke detectors range from single battery-powered units to several interconnected units with battery back-up. In domestic installations they need to be replaced after 10 years from the install.
